Bones could allow data swaps via handshake

Bones could allow data swaps via handshake
"The researchers suggest applications such as a vibrator in a wrist receiver/transmitter that could tell an implant placed near a bone to release a drug dose, with the implant then sending back data from its sensors. Similarly, tooth clacks or finger clicks could be interpreted by a receiver to activate, say, functions in a phone.

For Liebschner, the great benefit is security. "All data transfer is contained inside the human body, and it can only be retrieved through direct physical contact," he says. People could even swap information between devices via a firm handshake, Zhong suggests."

Welcome to Mars express: only a three hour trip

Welcome to Mars express: only a three hour trip
"The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension."

A Step Toward a Living, Learning Memory Chip

A Step Toward a Living, Learning Memory Chip: Scientific American
"The results, Ben-Jacob says, set the stage for the creation of a neuromemory chip that could be paired with computer hardware to create cyborglike machines capable of such tasks as detecting dangerous toxins in the air, allowing the blind to see or helping someone who is paralyzed regain some if not all muscle use."

Blimps to swim through the air like fish

Blimps to swim through the air like fish - space - 23 March 2007 - New Scientist Space
"Blimps steered by artificial muscles may one day swim through the air like fish, suggest recent flight tests. The blimps would be much quieter than those steered by traditional blimp propellers, making them ideal for observing wildlife."

A mysterious aerial device falls in Somalia.

A mysterious aerial device falls in Somalia.

"Ilyas spoke of the device, telling that in the daylight it glitters and in a nighttime, it turns lights and speaks a strange language which can’t be understood by the villagers."

Could we have hitched a ride on UFOs? | Technology | Guardian Unlimited Technology

"The documents show that the internal lobbying effort for a UFO study began in 1993. In a briefing note from the secret UFO investigation branch of Defence Intelligence - called DI55 - an unnamed author wrote: "The national security implications are considerable. We have many reports of strange objects in the skies and we have never investigated them."

Satellite could see shadow of extra dimensions

Satellite could see shadow of extra dimensions
A satellite to be launched next year could see signs of extra dimensions in the afterglow of the big bang, a new study says.

Some theories – such as string theory – that attempt to unify all known forces into a single "theory of everything" posit the existence of extra spatial dimensions beyond the three familiar ones.

But string theory has proven stubbornly resistant to experimental tests (although some physicists say it could be tested in the Large Hadron Collider scheduled to open by the end of 2007).

Now, Gary Shiu and Bret Underwood, both physicists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, US, say the shape of the extra dimensions could leave an imprint in the afterglow of the big bang. This glow, called the cosmic microwave background, reveals the structure of the universe about 370,000 years after the big bang.

Physicists Unite Light And Matter

Physicists Unite Light And Matter

Physicists have for the first time stopped and extinguished a light pulse in one part of space and then revived it in a completely separate location. They accomplished this feat by completely converting the light pulse into matter that travels between the two locations and is subsequently changed back to light.

Genetic Architecture

Genetic Architecture
The evolution of life and intelligence on Earth has finally reached the point where it is now deemed possible to engender something almost out of nothing. In principle, a universe of possible worlds based on generative principles inherent within nature and the physical universe is considered to be within the realm of the computable once quantum computing systems become a reality. For the first time, mankind is finally in possession of the power to change and transform the genetic constitution of biological species, which, without a doubt, has profound implications for the future of life on Earth.

And Then They Can Clean My Pool!

And Then They Can Rule The World!!

Japan eyes moon colonized by robots:

Japan will develop advanced robots which can operate exploration vehicles and make decisions on their own to build a base on the moon.

The exploration vehicles will be sent to the moon within 10 years, and the base completed within 20 years, officials said.

Disabled Japanese to scale Swiss mountain aided by 'robot suits':
The battery-powered suit, code-named HAL, detects muscle movements through the natural electrical currents that pass over the surface of the skin and anticipates the next move. In this way, it aids movement and enhances the strength of the wearer.

For the Power Geeks

ThinkGeek :: PowerSquid Outlet Multiplier

I can't count the times that I've gotten ticked off trying to plug all of my electronic devices into the power strip only to lose an outlet (or two!!!) to those oversized plugs. It's about time someone came up with a way to fix the waste. Who needs the strip in the power strip?

If I hadn't just bought a battery back-up to plug everything into, this would be my very next purchase. Hell, I might still buy one for other parts of the apartment.

The Profits Of Fear

If anyone is interested, click here for a long interview/essay about Sam Cohen, the inventor of the neutron bomb. He was involved with RAND, the think tank that influenced most of American military policy during the cold war.

It's a very interesting tale of a very earnest and honest-sounding man. He cuts no one involved with nuclear defence any slack, including himself. It's a good read.

If you're into this sort of thing.
